Gram and Gramps Hiddle are Sal's grandparents. Her father's mother and father. They call Sal their ' Chickabiddy '. Both Gram and Gramps are kind and loving grandparents. I'd always wanted to write a story based on that trip, and that story became The Wanderer. Was Walk Two Moons based on a real-life experience? There is a part of the book that is based on a real-life experience, and that is the trip that Salamanca takes from Ohio to Idaho.

The story starts in the Boxton Creek Home, an 'orphanage' run by the Trepids - a strict and dishonest husband and wife.
Outside of Boxton, on a plot of land called Ruby Holler , Tiller and Sairy Morey, a very old couple whose children have grown up and moved away, are discussing their plans for a new adventure. While traveling across the country to Idaho with her grandparents, she tells of her new best friend, Phoebe Winterbottom, while her own story unfolds at the same time.
